co-regulation
Reciprocal calming between people
Co-regulation is the process of managing emotions or behavior through interaction with another person, rather than alone.
A parent calming a distressed child is co-regulation; the child borrows the adult's steadiness.
The term appears in psychology and child development to describe how relationships help people regulate states they can't yet manage independently: Infants depend on co-regulation with caregivers before developing self-regulation.
