secure base

Trusted emotional refuge

A secure base is a person—typically a parent or caregiver—from whom a child can confidently venture out to explore, knowing they can return for comfort and reassurance.

The term comes from attachment theory: children who have a secure base develop greater confidence and resilience.

The concept extends to adult relationships, where a partner or trusted person provides similar emotional grounding: She was his secure base during the career transition.
