toprope
Climbing safety system
Toprope (also written top rope or top-rope) is a climbing technique where the rope runs from the belayer on the ground, up through an anchor at the top of the route, and back down to the climber.
This setup means the climber is always protected from above, making toproping the safest and most beginner-friendly form of roped climbing.
As a verb, to toprope a route is to climb it using this system: We toproped a few easy routes before attempting to lead.
