city gate
Walled town opening
A city gate is an entrance through a city wall, historically the main point of access where travelers and goods entered a fortified town.
Gates were guarded, often closed at night, and served as checkpoints for tolls and security.
In biblical and ancient contexts, the city gate was also where elders gathered to conduct business and render judgment: The prophet spoke at the city gate.
