victory arch
Conqueror's stone gateway
A victory arch is a monumental archway built to commemorate a military triumph or celebrate a conquering leader's return.
The form dates to ancient Rome, where generals processed through them in triumphal parades.
Later examples honor various victories: The Arc de Triomphe stands at the end of the Champs-Élysées.
Also called a triumphal arch.
