wood spirit
Mythical tree guardian
Wood spirit is methanol—a poisonous alcohol produced by distilling wood.
The term dates from when this was the primary method of obtaining it.
Drinking wood spirit causes blindness or death, which is why denatured alcohol (ethanol rendered undrinkable) often contains it.
Also called wood alcohol.
Separately, a wood spirit can be a mythical creature inhabiting forests.
