jumping bean
Larva-powered legume
A jumping bean is a seed pod from certain Mexican shrubs that moves or "jumps" because a moth larva inside shifts its weight.
The larva's movements cause the bean to roll or hop, especially when warmed.
Jumping beans are sold as novelties: The kids were fascinated by the jumping beans.
Figuratively, someone who can't sit still might be compared to a jumping bean.
