Sweet pickled vegetables
Chowchows are pickled relishes made from chopped vegetables—typically a mix of cabbage, peppers, onions, and green tomatoes—preserved in a spiced, sweetened vinegar brine.
The condiment is especially associated with Southern and Pennsylvania Dutch cooking: She served chowchow alongside the pork chops.
Also spelled chow-chow or chow chow. (Capitalized Chow Chow is the dog breed.)
