chiasm

Nerve fibers crossing

A chiasm is a crossing or intersection of two structures, especially in anatomy where nerve fibers cross from one side of the body to the other.

The optic chiasm is where the optic nerves partially cross before reaching the brain.

In rhetoric, chiasm (or chiasmus) is a figure of speech that reverses the order of words in parallel phrases: Ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country.
