chequers

Alternating square pattern

Chequers is a pattern of squares in alternating colors, like a checkerboard.

The word also names the game of draughts (called checkers in American English).

To chequer something is to mark it with such a pattern, or figuratively to variegate: a chequered career suggests alternating successes and failures.

This is the British spelling; Americans use checkers. (Capitalized Chequers is the British Prime Minister's country residence.)
