chequered flag

Victory lane signal

A chequered flag (checkered flag in American spelling) is the black-and-white patterned flag waved at the finish line of motor races to signal that the winner has completed the course.

By extension, it represents any kind of finish or completion, particularly a successful one: After years of development, the project finally reached the chequered flag.

The pattern itself has become iconic in racing culture, appearing on everything from trophies to merchandise.
