chalkware

Painted plaster figurines

Chalkware refers to decorative figurines and ornaments made from plaster of Paris, popular in American folk art from the mid-1800s through the mid-1900s.

Often painted in bright colors, chalkware pieces—animals, fruits, Santa figures—were sold cheaply at carnivals and fairs as prizes or souvenirs.

The material is fragile and chips easily, making intact antique pieces collectible.
