chalk lines
Court edge markings
Chalk lines are straight lines made by snapping a taut string coated in colored chalk powder against a surface.
Carpenters and builders use them to mark long, perfectly straight guidelines for cutting or aligning materials: He snapped a chalk line across the plywood before making the cut.
The tool itself—a reel of string in a chalk-filled case—is also called a chalk line.
