chads

Hole punch remnants

Chads are the small pieces of paper or cardboard punched out when creating holes—in punch cards, hole punches, or voting ballots.

The word gained prominence during the 2000 U.S. presidential election, when recounts in Florida hinged on whether ballot chads were fully detached.

A hanging chad remains partially attached; a dimpled chad is merely indented.
