castle towns
Fortified urban centers
Castle towns are settlements that developed around or near a fortified castle, with the castle serving as the administrative, military, and economic center.
Common in medieval Europe and feudal Japan, these towns grew organically as merchants, artisans, and workers clustered near the protection and commerce a castle provided.
Many modern cities began as castle towns, their origins still visible in street layouts radiating from a central fortress.
