inner citadel
Fortress within fortress
Inner citadel is a metaphor from Stoic philosophy for the part of the mind that remains untouchable by external circumstances.
The idea is that while you cannot control what happens to you, you can control your response—your inner citadel is the fortress of judgment and will that no one can breach without your permission.
No matter what they took from him, his inner citadel remained intact.
