carrying pole

Balance beam carrier

A carrying pole is a straight bar, usually wooden or bamboo, balanced across one shoulder to transport loads suspended from each end.

The design distributes weight evenly and allows the carrier to walk with a rhythmic bounce that eases the burden.

Traditional throughout Asia for hauling water, produce, or goods: vendors with carrying poles lined the market street.
