canvasback
North American diver
A canvasback is a large North American diving duck, prized by hunters for its meat.
The name comes from the male's pale gray back, which resembles canvas fabric.
Canvasbacks frequent lakes and coastal bays, diving for aquatic plants: We spotted a raft of canvasbacks on the Chesapeake.
