drake

Waterfowl, but male

A drake is an adult male duck.

The word is less common than the female counterpart "duck," which serves for both sexes in casual speech, but appears in nature writing and among hunters: The drake's iridescent head distinguished it from the drab hen.

Drake is also an archaic or poetic term for a dragon. (Capitalized Drake is a surname or given name.)
