canal locks

Boat-lifting chambers

Canal locks are enclosed chambers in waterways that raise or lower boats between sections at different elevations.

Gates at each end trap water, which is then added or drained to match the level ahead.

A series of locks forms a staircase allowing vessels to climb or descend hills: The Panama Canal uses locks to lift ships 85 feet above sea level.
