cager

Slang for basketballer

A cager is a basketball player, from the early days when courts were enclosed by wire cages to keep the ball in play and protect spectators.

The term survives in sports journalism: The cagers take the court tonight for the championship.

In cycling and motorcycling slang, cager refers dismissively to someone who drives a car—enclosed in their metal cage, oblivious to two-wheeled traffic.
