off-trail

Away from paths

Off-trail describes travel or activity away from established paths or marked routes: We went off-trail to find the waterfall.

Hikers go off-trail intentionally to explore, or unintentionally when lost.

The term applies literally to wilderness travel and figuratively to any departure from the expected course: The conversation went off-trail into personal territory.
