Strangeways
Notable British penitentiary
Strangeways is a district in Manchester, England, known primarily for HM Prison Manchester, commonly called Strangeways after its location.
The prison, built in 1868, gained notoriety from the 1990 Strangeways riot—the longest prison riot in British history.
In British speech, Strangeways often serves as shorthand for the prison itself: He did five years in Strangeways.
