boll weevil
Fiber crop pest
A boll weevil is a small beetle that feeds on cotton plants, laying eggs in the cotton bolls and devastating crops.
Native to Mexico, it spread through the American South in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, destroying the cotton economy and forcing agricultural diversification.
In American political slang, boll weevil referred to conservative Southern Democrats who often voted with Republicans.
