blackfishing

Faking ethnic identity

Blackfishing is when a white person alters their appearance to seem Black or mixed-race—through tanning, makeup, hairstyles, or photo editing.

The term draws on "catfishing" (online identity deception) and implies appropriation of Black aesthetics for social media clout or commercial gain while avoiding the discrimination Black people face: She was accused of blackfishing after her Instagram photos surfaced.
