birthers
Certificate conspiracy theorists
Birthers are people who believe or promote the conspiracy theory that Barack Obama was not born in the United States and therefore was constitutionally ineligible for the presidency.
The term emerged during Obama's 2008 campaign and persisted through his administration despite official documentation proving his Hawaiian birth.
The birthers refused to accept the long-form birth certificate.
The word now applies more broadly to anyone pushing similar conspiracy theories about a politician's eligibility.
