birther movement
Obama citizenship doubters
The birther movement was a conspiracy theory popular among some American conservatives claiming that Barack Obama was not born in the United States and therefore ineligible for the presidency.
Despite Obama's release of his birth certificate showing he was born in Hawaii, adherents insisted the document was forged.
The movement peaked in the early 2010s and is widely viewed as having racist undertones.
A birther is someone who promoted or believed the theory.
