birther

Origin document doubter

A birther is someone who believes or promotes the conspiracy theory that Barack Obama was not born in the United States and therefore was constitutionally ineligible to serve as president.

The term emerged during Obama's 2008 campaign and peaked around 2011: The birthers demanded to see his birth certificate.

By extension, birther now sometimes describes anyone who questions a political figure's legitimacy based on dubious claims about their origins.
