beefalo

Bison-cattle offspring

A beefalo is a hybrid animal bred from domestic cattle and American bison, combining characteristics of both species.

The cross was developed to produce meat that is leaner than conventional beef while retaining the hardiness and foraging ability of bison.

Beefalo are fertile, unlike many hybrid animals, and have been bred commercially since the 1970s.

The term also refers to meat from these animals.
