Beardie is informal for a bearded dragon, the popular pet lizard native to Australia: My beardie loves basking under his heat lamp.
The term also refers to a bearded collie, the shaggy Scottish herding dog.
In both cases, the nickname comes from the distinctive facial hair or scales that suggest a beard.
