batholith

Subsurface granite mass

A batholith is a massive formation of igneous rock that solidified deep underground, later exposed by erosion of the overlying material.

Batholiths form the cores of mountain ranges and can extend for thousands of square miles.

The Sierra Nevada and the Coast Range of British Columbia are underlain by batholiths.
