bastardy
Out of wedlock
Bastardy is the state of being born to unmarried parents—what the law historically called illegitimate birth.
The term appears primarily in legal and historical contexts: laws governing bastardy, a bastardy proceeding to establish paternity.
The word carries the same stigma as bastard and sounds archaic in modern usage, where "born out of wedlock" or simply "paternity" has largely replaced it.
