base stations
Cellular transmission towers
Base stations are fixed radio transmitters that communicate with mobile devices within a coverage area.
In cellular networks, base stations connect phones to the broader telecommunications system—each station serves a geographic cell, and calls hand off between stations as you move.
The term also applies to charging docks for cordless phones or other wireless devices: Place the handset back on the base station to charge.
