barcodes

Product identity stripes

Barcodes are machine-readable patterns of parallel lines or squares that encode information—typically product identification numbers.

A scanner reads the barcode and retrieves data from a database: price, inventory status, shipping details.

The familiar striped barcode appears on nearly all retail products; newer QR codes use a square grid pattern that smartphones can read.
