baggageman

Station luggage worker

A baggageman is a railroad or transportation worker who handles passengers' luggage and freight.

The term was common in the days when train travel dominated long-distance transportation, referring specifically to the employee who worked in the baggage car, loading, unloading, and keeping track of checked items.

The baggageman helped us locate our trunk after it went to the wrong station.

The occupation has largely disappeared with the decline of passenger rail service.
