An awareness ribbon is a small loop of colored fabric worn to show support for a cause or solidarity with people affected by a disease, social issue, or tragedy.
Different colors represent different causes: pink for breast cancer, red for AIDS, yellow for missing persons.
The symbol emerged in the early 1990s and quickly proliferated, with dozens of colors now claimed by various campaigns.
She pinned a purple awareness ribbon to her lapel for Alzheimer's awareness.
