automatic fire
Holding trigger down
Automatic fire is continuous shooting from a weapon that keeps firing as long as the trigger is held down, as opposed to semi-automatic fire, which requires a separate trigger pull for each shot.
The term appears in discussions of military weapons and gun regulations: The rifle was capable of automatic fire.
