audibles

Last-second play switches

Audibles is the plural of audible, which as a noun refers to sounds that can be heard or, in American football, a play called at the line of scrimmage to replace the originally planned play: The quarterback called three audibles in the fourth quarter.

The verb audible means to call such a change, and has extended to mean changing plans on the fly: We had to audible when the restaurant was closed.
