arrowslit

Narrow defensive opening

An arrowslit is a narrow vertical opening in a fortification wall, designed so defenders could shoot arrows or crossbow bolts while remaining protected.

The slit is narrow on the outside and widens inward, giving the archer room to aim while presenting minimal target to attackers.

Also called a loophole or arrow loop.
