apperception

Mind knowing itself

Apperception is the mind's process of assimilating new experience by relating it to what's already known.

In psychology and philosophy, it distinguishes mere perception (raw sensory input) from the interpretive act of understanding—how you recognize a shape as a familiar face rather than just seeing lines and shadows.

The child's apperception of the story depended on experiences she'd already had.
