Icelandic sagas
Medieval Nordic narratives
Icelandic sagas are medieval prose narratives written in Old Norse, mostly in 13th and 14th century Iceland.
They recount the deeds of Norse settlers, legendary heroes, and kings—blending historical memory with literary craft.
The sagas are celebrated for their spare, direct style and psychological depth: the family sagas, Njál's Saga.
In extended use, any long, complicated story of events: the saga of their divorce.
