anabranch

Diverging stream branch

An anabranch is a branch of a river that diverges from the main channel and rejoins it downstream, or sometimes loses itself in sandy ground.

Unlike a distributary, which flows away permanently, an anabranch reconnects: The anabranch carried water only during flood season.
