Preserved cocktail garnish
Maraschino refers to a sweet liqueur distilled from marasca cherries, or more commonly to the bright red preserved cherries used as cocktail garnishes and dessert toppings: a Manhattan with a maraschino, ice cream sundaes topped with maraschino cherries.
The cherries sold in jars are typically dyed and sweetened, bearing little resemblance to the original Italian preparation.
