amah
Eastern household caretaker
Amah is a term used mainly in South and East Asia for a woman employed as a nursemaid or domestic servant, particularly one who cares for children.
The word entered English through Portuguese colonial contact and remains common in Singapore, Hong Kong, and other regions with historical European influence.
The children adored their amah, who had been with the family for years.
