account book

Business transaction log

An account book is a ledger or journal used to record financial transactions, tracking money received, spent, owed, or due.

Before computerized bookkeeping, businesses and households maintained physical account books to monitor their finances.

The term now sounds somewhat old-fashioned, as most accounting happens digitally, but it still appears in historical contexts and in references to basic record-keeping: She found her grandmother's account book from the 1940s in the attic.
