charterhouses

Secluded monastic communities

Charterhouses are Carthusian monasteries, named after the Grande Chartreuse in the French Alps where the order was founded.

The word also refers to institutions that later occupied former monastery sites, most notably Charterhouse School in London.

The singular charterhouse appears in historical and religious contexts: The monks lived in silence at the charterhouse.
