USS Indianapolis
Shark attack vessel
The USS Indianapolis was a United States Navy cruiser that delivered components of the first atomic bomb to Tinian Island in 1945, then was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine.
Of roughly 1,200 crew, only 316 survived—many died from shark attacks while awaiting rescue in the Pacific for four days.
The sinking remains one of the worst naval disasters in American history and has become synonymous with catastrophic loss at sea.
