RMS Lusitania
Sunk British ship
RMS Lusitania was a British ocean liner torpedoed by a German submarine off the coast of Ireland in 1915, killing nearly 1,200 passengers and crew, including 128 Americans.
The sinking inflamed American public opinion against Germany and became a factor in the United States entering World War I two years later.
The ship remains a symbol of the dangers civilians face in wartime and the moral complexities of submarine warfare.
