UAP

Government's strange sighting

UAP stands for unidentified anomalous phenomenon (or phenomena), the term that has largely replaced UFO in official government and military contexts.

The shift from "flying object" to "anomalous phenomenon" reflects uncertainty about whether sightings involve physical craft at all: The Pentagon released footage of UAPs tracked by Navy pilots.

The term gained prominence through congressional hearings and official reports in the 2020s.
