colonial power

Overseas territory holder

A colonial power is a nation that establishes and maintains control over territories outside its borders, typically through settlement, economic exploitation, and political domination.

Britain, France, Spain, and Portugal were major colonial powers from the sixteenth through twentieth centuries.

The term often carries critical connotations, implying extraction of resources and suppression of indigenous peoples: The colonial powers carved up Africa with little regard for existing cultures.
